Caring for the land also means giving space back to nature. That is why Roten has chosen to create its own Biodiversity Oasis in partnership with 3Bee | XNatura—an Italian „naturetech“ company that develops technologies to monitor, protect, and regenerate biodiversity.
Biodiversity refers to the variety of living organisms that inhabit a given area: plants, insects, animals, and microorganisms. Each plays a specific role, and together they keep nature functioning. Among the key players are pollinators—bees and other insects that, by carrying pollen from one flower to another, enable plants to produce fruits and seeds. Approximately three-quarters of the world’s major food crops benefit from their work.
Yet, they are in trouble: according to the European Commission, one in three species of bees, butterflies, and hoverflies in Europe is in decline due to habitat loss, pesticides, and climate change. The most concrete way to reverse this trend is to create new spaces where they can feed and find shelter.
Our 100 plants. In the province of Pavia, we have chosen to adopt and protect 100 nectar-bearing plants—part of a 3Bee Biodiversity Oasis—selected specifically because they produce the nectar and pollen that serve as food for bees and wild pollinators:
30 sycamore maples
30 cherry trees
20 European ash trees
20 hazel trees
As they grow, these plants will provide food and shelter for local wildlife for many years to come.
A beehive of our very own. Alongside the plants, we have adopted a beehive—home to as many as 60,000 bees—which is managed by a local beekeeper. The queen bee is named Ricciola. The hive is equipped with sensors that monitor its health; since bees can fly up to three kilometers away, their well-being serves as an indicator of the health of the surrounding environment. They are, in effect, nature’s sentinels.
The Oasis is managed by Ernesto Cavanna, a grower within the 3Bee network. His journey began in 1980 with a passion for beekeeping, which evolved into a professional business in 2001. Since 2011, he has focused on reforesting his land, and from 2017, he has dedicated himself to creating „nectar-rich“ woodlands—supplementing the native walnut and sessile oak trees with maples, ashes, and cherry trees to build ecosystems designed to nourish and protect pollinators.
Our beehive is overseen by beekeeper Alberto Reale, who checks the health of the colony and documents its life during his regular visits.
The Oasis has a dedicated digital page, open to everyone, where you can find a map, photos of the plants and the beehive taken during site visits, and the latest monitoring data:
